The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world’s most popular scuba course in the world and has introduced millions of people to the adventurous diving lifestyle. This is your ticket to a lifetime of intense adventure with PADI, the dive company that sets the standards in the global diving community.
As a certified PADI Open Water Diver, the most widely recognised and respected rating in the world; you have the freedom to dive with a buddy independent of a professional. Throughout the course, you’ll learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including safe diving practices, dive equipment and techniques. You earn this rating by completing five pool dives and knowledge development sessions and by making four open water dives.
What You Learn
The PADI Open Water Diver course consists of three main phases:
- Knowledge Development to understand basic principles of scuba diving (online, home study or in a the B.A.D. classroom)- 5 modules
- Confined Water Dives in a pool to learn basic scuba skills – 5 modules
- Open Water Dives to review your skills and explore!- 4 dives
If you’ve tried diving through a Discover Scuba Diving experience or resort course, the skills you learned may be credited towards a portion of the full PADI Open Water Diver course certification.
How Long Will it Take?
There are a couple of options you can choose when completing your PADI Open Water Course.
You can choose to complete the full course with us. (This would take 3 full day Saturday sessions and an additional weekend, both Saturday and Sunday to complete the 4 open water dives)
You can choose to complete the theory and the confined sessions with us then complete your open water dives abroad. (This would take 3 full day Saturday sessions)- This is a referral.
You can choose to complete your theory online at home and then complete your confined dives and open water dives with us. (This would take 3 Saturday afternoons)
Or you could complete your theory online at home, your confined pool sessions with us and then your open water dives abroad. (This would take 3 Saturday afternoons and an additional weekend, both Saturday and Sunday to complete the 4 open water dives). This is also a referral.
You could also choose to come on our annual Malta trip abroad to complete your open water dives after finishing your theory and pool sessions in the UK with us.
All PADI courses are performance based, not time based, so don’t worry if you get stuck on any part of the course. As long as you put the effort in, we’ll let you come back until you pass with NO EXTRA COST TO YOU.
If you choose to complete the elearning at home, once you’ve finished your eLearning you can contact us to arrange your confined pool sessions.

There are a few requirements.
To enrol in the PADI Open Water Diver course, you must be in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water. You should be able to answer “No” to all questions on the Medical Questionnaire. If you need to answer “Yes” to any question then don’t worry. You just need a signature of your Doctor or one of our dive Doctors to say that you are fit to dive an then you can join us on the course.
Be 10 years or older to start the theory and pool sessions (PADI eLearning requires a minimum age of 13 years due to international internet laws)
Be 12 years old to start the Open Water Dives (this is limited by Capernwray dive site Health and Safety rules)
